RESUMEN

Physician burnout has become a prevalent issue in intensive care units, and studies have shown it has become worse with the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing and reducing ICU physician burnout is important because of the potential effects on patient care, physician health, and the hospital. The most common symptoms of burnout include fatigue, callousness towards patients, inability to feel happy, anxiety, and depression. Causes of burnout can include work related factors, personal characteristics, and organizational factors. COVID has brought unprecedented work flow, increased number of critical and ethical decision making, and increase in death, all of which can lead to burnout. Strategies to combat burnout generally come in two different ways-organization based and individual based. This paper examines these current strategies and their efficacy in reducing burnout and proposes an implementation plan for the ICU to use based on current literature.

RESUMEN

Laboratory medicine and the services provided throughout the healthcare system remain critical components in the ability to deliver quality patient care. Over the years and as of recently, due to COVID-19, delivery of proper care has been challenged with continual staffing constraints within the clinical laboratory. While this is not a new issue, its exacerbation poses an ongoing threat to clinical laboratories nationwide and has many healthcare administrators and executives searching for viable solutions. This paper focuses on exploring the depth and breadth of the issue to get to the root of the cause(s) of the critical shortage. Once these keys issues are identified, then realistic and effective solutions can be proposed and implemented throughout the laboratory field.

RESUMEN

The healthcare industry has many examples of innovation in the provision of care. Recent events such as the COVID-19 pandemic have thrust care delivery into an emergency paradigm of new technology adoption. Enterprise technology adoption specifies expanded competencies for effective care delivery. The purpose of this scoping review is to provide an overview of the literature available on health executive competencies linked to enterprise adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. A scoping review was conducted using Arksey and O'Malley's framework informed with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension for scoping reviews. The research team conducted searches in seven bibliographic databases as well as in the grey literature to identify studies. Selection, review, and characterization was performed by two independent reviewers on a team of five researchers. The search identified 77 articles published between January 2000 to March 2020. The articles were varied among their foci on competencies and uses of AI technologies. Three broad categories of publications emerged: healthcare delivery and application of AI, impact to operations or resources, and challenges associated with the adoption of emerging technologies. There are significant gaps in the literature on competencies related to enterprise adoption of AI methods. The synthesized evidence makes a case for additional high-quality studies for health care leaders around AI technology adoption.

RESUMEN

Across the Nation, hospitals were experiencing staffing shortages long before the onset of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) or COVID-19. However, the pandemic has exacerbated these shortages. The sudden and overwhelming demand of frontline healthcare workers exploded with the surge of critically ill patients funneling into hospitals affecting all fifty states. The pandemic produced a plethora of challenges leading to increased stress levels and burnout, not to mention diminished retention of existing staff. These challenges also lead to adverse effects on patient satisfaction and patient outcomes. Staffing shortages and retention issues result from many factors and remain a complex situation for many hospitals nationwide. In some instances, activation and mobilization of the National Guard and Reserve Forces was necessary, as they offered medics to fill the shortages. Solutions are needed to the issues presented in this paper to keep our frontline healthcare workers mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy so they have the ability to serve others in their time of need. Moreover, this situation cannot be rectified with a one-size-fits-all approach. It will require a multifaceted plan of action to increase frontline healthcare workers' satisfaction and retention, leading to improved patient safety and outcomes. This paper will identify the staffing shortages and retention issues, with information leading to potential solutions, using a proposed implementation plan that has been constructed from literature, research and innovative healthcare programs that have proven effective.

RESUMEN

Telehealth has become an emerging service over the years in healthcare. Our focus for this study is the use of telehealth in emergency room settings to reduce long wait times for patients. Studies have shown how telehealth can provide positive change in an emergency room by reducing overall costs, readmissions, physician burnout, long wait times, and most importantly improvement in patient satisfaction. As healthcare progresses in advanced telecommunication and information technology, health systems will be able to better serve communities and close the gap of disparities.

RESUMEN

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many healthcare organizations were forced to utilize eHealth options to continue with patient care. Many healthcare provider groups were unable to treat their patients in their offices and were unable to see patients in a brick and mortar building. Healthcare workers had to start thinking outside of the box in order to continue treating their patients, while maintaining social distancing, and preserving Personal Protective Equipment. Hospitals are closing their doors to non-emergent patients to try and combat the spread of COVID-19. It limited patient options of going into a healthcare facility to use traditional telemedicine. Organizations across the country had to start using products like ZOOM and Doxy.me to treat their patient population. The federal government has currently lifted the billing restrictions in light of the pandemic, so healthcare organizations are able to still collect on office visits while patients are staying home. I will discuss how easy it can be for patients and providers to receive and provide healthcare through the easily accessible digital face to face platforms. Technology is not going to be going away anytime soon and this is the time for healthcare organizations to capitalize on it.
